Tyres are those essential parts of your car which provides you traction, & provides flexible cushion to vehicle which absorbs shocks given by road. There are many well acclaimed tyre companies which provide tyres to our vehicles some of them are :-

  • Bridgestone –

So all the tyres have code system moulded into their sidewalls which allows us to understand the tyre technically. These tyres specification tells us about a tyre’s size, construction type, load rating, & speed rating.

For example a very common tyre in India :-

165/80R14 85T.

165 – This indicates the section width of the tyres in millimeters (165mm).

80 – Indicates nominal aspect ratio(Sectionheight/Section width). These are dimensions of sidewalls of tyres (where 80 indicates the height of tyre is 80% of its width).

R – This indicates the construction type of type (where R stands for  Radial).

14 – 14 is the nominal rim diameter of the tyre. 14 inches is the rim diameter.

85T – These two  codes indicates load rating & speed rating respectively. In this 85 stands for load rating which shows maximum load carrying capacity & T stands for speed rating at which tyre can be safely operated subject to tyre being in good condition, appropriately fitted and along with recommended inflation pressures. (85 shows maximum load of 515kg/tyre & T shows a maximum speed of 190km/hr.)

SPEED SYMBOL: This indicates the maximum safe speed corresponding to its given load index at which the vehicle can be plied, under specified conditions.
